The KIT protein is found in the cell membrane of certain cell types where a specific protein, called stem cell 2021-04-10 · This gene was initially identified as a homolog of the feline sarcoma viral oncogene v-kit and is often referred to as proto-oncogene c-Kit. The canonical form of this glycosylated transmembrane protein has an N-terminal extracellular region with five immunoglobulin-like domains, a transmembrane region, and an intracellular tyrosine kinase domain at the C-terminus. With the success of imatinib mesylate in the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors expressing c-kit, its use in SCLC serves as a novel molecular therapeutic approach. The activity of imatinib mesylate is correlated with the mutation of c-kit gene exons 9 and 11 in gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Tumors in which mutations in the c-Kit gene have been detected include canine and feline mast cell tumors (MCTs) and canine gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and have been suspected in canine oral melanomas. ITD mutations in exon 11 of c-Kit have been detected in about 20 to 30 percent of canine cutaneous MCTs.
