Australian and New Zealand Journal of Ophthalmology, 1998. Keith Davey Heimann-Bielschowsky phenomenon Aharmlessmonocularnystagmus Audrey Nguyen, MD, and François-Xavier Borruat, MD Neurology Heimann-Bielschowsky phenomenon is a type of monocular nystagmus that occurs due to longstanding poor vision in one eye with amblyopia, optic neuropathy, or dense cataract. It can often be inhibited by convergence or fixation. The Heimann-Bielschowsky phenomenon (HBP) is an unusual form of monocular vertical pendular nystagmus and is usually asymptomatic.
It consists of strictly monocular coarse, pendular vertical oscillations occurring only in the amblyopic eye. Any complaints or observations should also be noted. For example, diplopia, dissociated vertical deviation, nystagmus, saccadic intrusions or / and the Heimann-Bielschowsky phenomenon should also be noted. Ocular motility (OM) The OM assessment is used to identify any muscle weaknesses or eye movement disorders. This category contains all article categories. The physiologic basis of the head tilt test was explained by Alfred Bielschowsky and Hofmann in 1935. It can be distinguished from the Heimann-Bielschowsky phenomenon, which causes monocular vertical eye movement by the character of the vertical oscillations.

The vertical oscillation is of equal velocity in both vertical directions, or may sometimes be greater in the downward than upward direction.
